A slight disclaimer before hand is in order, I've only had the opportunity to read the first 3 out of 9 published books so far, but it certainly is enough to paint a fairly detailed picture of my impressions.
The story can be a little generic, although the setting is very interesting, albeit a tad outrageous. No major spoilers here, but the generic harem that's inevitably built up is made rather I enjoy this series not for its generic characters, or the ridiculous plot devices, but the setting and character development that is relatively fantastical, detached from reality just enough for a sizable amount of preposterousness but not so far fetched as to alienate us in the real world.
I suppose the main purpose of this review was to supply the new English speaking fans of Hidan no Aria courtesy of J. Staff's anime adaption with directions for finding a version of the light novel they can read, and they can find it on baka tsuki, the fan translation wiki.
